Possibilities and consequences of using smartphones in learning activities

The article discusses the expedience of smartphones use in educational process, focuses on the negative impact of digital gadgets on cognitive processes of a student. There exists a controversy between expected results of the use of innovative digital technologies in education and psychological research data concerning the impact of gadgets on cognitive abilities. Four foreign studies of the smartphones influence on human cognitive processes are reviewed. The article describes an experiment conducted at Ural State University of Architecture and Art with first-year students, which allows doubting the usefulness of electronic gadgets at classes. The experiment can be regarded as a pedagogical technique that convinces a student to develop memory and the ability to process information without resorting to artificial intelligence, thereby developing professional thinking, skills and speech.
