The article elicits the possibilities of using a Russian-English glossary as part of out-of-class activities of cadets of educational institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia when teaching them the academic discipline “Foreign Language”. Work with a glossary is demonstrated in stages, starting from its formation by cadets to the use of nominative means included in the glossary when producing a thematic statement. The stages of formation and filling of the glossary are based on the functional-role approach to the categorization of the reference zone “Activities of an employee of the road patrol service of the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia”. As an example, the types of tasks for improving the following components of professional foreign language communicative competence are proposed: language subcompetence (practicing the phonetic variant of a word and establishing sound-letter correspondences, selecting one lexeme for three contexts, recognizing homoforms, transforming a sentence using a specific word), discursive subcompetence (distribution of nominative units by situations in accordance with their functional register), sociocultural subcompetence (identifying differences in functional analogues in different languages) and speech subcompetence (use of nominative means in speech in accordance with the communicative goal).
