Interaction of church authorities and the scientific community on the study and preservation of cultural heritage

This article examines the attempts of the highest spiritual authorities and the scientific community to pursue a policy in the field of monument protection in the XIX - early XX century. The article notes that since the XVIII century, the Holy Synod has been engaged in the preservation of monuments of church antiquity. He issued decrees, orders and definitions aimed at identifying, studying and preserving cultural heritage, and from the middle of the XIX century began to listen to the opinion of secular authorities and academic circles, as scientific societies began to play a significant role in the cultural life of the country. The article discusses draft laws aimed at preserving cultural heritage, and highlights the problems that stand in the way of representatives of the clergy and academia in this difficult issue
