The relationship between emotional intelligence and students’ academic performance

The article analyzes the essence and interrelation of emotional and academic (educational) types of intelligence; systematizes scientific approaches to the study of emotional intelligence; expands theoretical ideas about its connection with academic performance. The structure of students’ emotional intelligence is clarified, consisting of two groups of personal qualities aimed at managing emotions in order to improve academic performance. Its functions that ensure the future professional success of students are highlighted; the successive components of emotional intelligence are indicated: academic performance, education, and competence. The results of an empirical study of the relationship between students’ emotional intelligence and academic performance according to the formula (EI + IQ = AU) are presented. The expediency of using the results of the conducted research by teachers and psychologists in working with students on the development of their emotional intelligence is noted; the possibility of further studying the structural components of emotional intelligence is considered.
