Notes about modern Russian ethymological lexicography

The article identifies the place of “The Russian Etymological Dictionary” among other works on Russian etymological lexicography. Focusing on dialectal etymological lexicography, we analyze the peculiarities of the dictionaries of this kind (S. A. Myznikov, A. S. Gerd) in comparison with M. Vasmer’s fundamental work, as well as additions proposed by O. N. Trubachev and B. O. Ogibenin. When considering the latest attempts to correct the semantic reconstruction by M. Vasmer, we come to the conclusion that his solutions are often preferable. The task is to create a compact (probably one-volume) etymological dictionary of the Russian language, which would replace Vasmer’s dictionary as a basic “all-Russian” etymological dictionary. Among other tasks, it is noted the expediency of creating a new dictionary of Turkisms (Mongolisms or even Orientalisms) of the Russian language.
