Островная археология - одно из наиболее динамично развивающихся направлений как в тихоокеанской, так и в мировой археологии. Она занимается изучением взаимоотношений человека и островов (заселением, освоением, адаптацией) в прошлом. В этом контексте именно малые архипелаги и отдельные острова тропического пояса Пасифики привлекают своей спецификой и возможностью определять их как своеобразные «исследовательские лаборатории» или «археологические микромиры». В качестве примеров авторами рассматриваются особенности культурогенеза на Молуккских островах, на острове Тимор и на архипелаге Палау в хронологических рамках эпох палеолита - палеометалла (43 - 1,5 тыс. л.н.).
