Documentary materials about the Kalmyk people in the “Acts Collected by the Caucasian Archaeographic Commission”: a source‑based analysis of the administrative integration of a nomadic society (18th–19th centuries)

The article is based on documents published in the journal “Acts Collected by the Caucasian Archaeological Commission” (hereinafter referred to as Acts) for the period from 1866-1878, the founder and editor of which was the famous Russian Oriental historian, Caucasian scholar and archaeographer A. P. Berge. In total, in the period from 1866 to 1904. 12 volumes have been published (vol. 6. of 2 parts). These publications were studied by N. S. Tashninov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Culture of the National Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences (now KalmSC RAS) during a scientific trip to the State Archive of the Stavropol Territory (1960). In five of them, in the section “The Caucasian Line” (volumes I, III, IV, V, VI) and In one section of the Astrakhan Province (Volume VII), the scientist identified documents containing information about the Kalmyks. Certified copies of these documents were submitted to the scientific archive of the KNIYALI, and the formed archival file was assigned an archival code: F. 4 “Sector of History”, Op. 2, D. 51 “Acts collected by the Caucasian Archaeographic Commission on the Kalmyks identified in the Stavropol State Archives. 1960”, on 162 pages. The study showed that the original documents were deposited in the archives of the Main Directorate of the Viceroy of the Caucasus and after the establishment of the Caucasian Archaeographic Commission (1864), which was tasked with conducting an examination of the value of archival documents, identifying documents of historical significance, and publishing them in the Acts. The documents of this importance include those on the Kalmyks, which provide information about the state of the Kalmyk Steppe after the majority of the Kalmyk people left for their historical homeland of Dzungaria in 1771; the implementation of state policies to integrate the Kalmyk society into the Russian state system; and the relationships between the Kalmyks and other peoples living in the Caucasus, among other issues. In this study, the author conducted a source-based analysis of the composition and content of the documents, specifically examined the attitude of the Kalmyks towards the Caucasian Line, and briefly described the documents included in the archival file No. 51. The study showed that the documents identified and published by the members of the Caucasian Archaeographic Commission are undoubtedly written sources for studying the history of the Kalmyk people during the complex historical period of the gradual integration of the Kalmyk society into the Russian space, and they can be used by historians, sociologists, politicians, local historians, and anyone interested in the history of the Russian state in the 19th century during the period of administrative reforms.
