Pftenomenon / pftenomena of religious renewal: ways and features of conceptualization

Free access

Religious renewal as a problem of religious studies and theological discourse took shape at the beginning of the 20th century, in connection with the rapid deployment of the Modern project, which caused a wave of religious reform in Russia, Western Europe and the Islamic world. Today this concept is widely used to characterize religious processes and phenomena that have arisen as a result of the interaction between religion as a dynamic spiritual and social subsystem and society as a social system in the process of development. However, to date, religious studies have not yet developed an integrative approach to understanding the phenomenon / phenomena of religious renewal, which would make it possible to find out why in a particular religious culture, religious renewal is becoming a form of self-expression and self-identification of religious reform movements. A study of the experience of Orthodox, Catholic and Islamic renewal movements of the 20th century allows us to conclude that religious renewal is a modification of religious reformism, combining selected elements of religious fundamentalism and religious modernism, which, under the influence of secularization, interact and creatively reinterpret / reformulate the religious tradition. At the same time, religious renewal is a strategy of the social action of religion, focused on the development and implementation (through the synthesis of tradition and innovation) of alternative options for social development.
