From Algorithms to Articulation: Exploring AI's Role in Enhancing Speaking Skills Among Iranian ELT Learners

AI is changing the way students learn languages, making it easier and more effective to improve their communication skills. This study explores the impact of AI-based applications on the speaking skills of Iranian English Language Teaching (ELT) learners. Using a quantitative approach, 84 junior high school students were divided into an experimental group, which utilized AI tools such as ChatGPT and Smalltalk2, and a control group that followed traditional methods. Data collected through pre- and post-speaking proficiency tests and surveys revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group on the speaking test and demonstrated significant improvements in fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary usage. Learners also reported heightened engagement and personalized learning experiences with AI applications. These findings underscore the transformative potential of AI in enhancing speaking skills and highlight its value as an innovative tool for modern language education.
