Canon and beauty in byzantine culture

This article addresses the meaning of the canon, a fundamental principle in Byzantine art. The author explores the development of research positions in Russian artistic Byzantinism, highlighting key figures and methodological stages (iconographic, formal-stylistic, hierotopic). The article underscores the defining role of the typological principle in contemporary humanities to adequately understand the forms of artistic consciousness in medieval Byzantium. The canonicity of Byzantine church art is examined as the embodiment of eternal spiritual laws governing the world.
