The article deals with the communicative and functional approach in teaching the practical course of the foreign language at the primary stage at the university. On the basis of the approach there are developed the eight stages of the work with the new text material, including the acquirement of the semantic features of the grammatical phenomena in the process of their usage in the unity with the contenT. In the article there are presented the different kinds of the exercises for the development of the communicative competence of the studentS.
