The efficiency of the project method in education is reasoned. There is suggested the monument of the old Russian fortification architecture - the fortress walls of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius - as the subject of the project-based study. The author defines the algorithm of the implementation of the project and identifies the vectors of the scientific search of the students. There are suggested the expressions of the word men and historians and the data of the historical records of the XVIIth century, that help to evaluate and to present the information of the architectural complex.
