The issues of development and use of criteria-based assessment in the process of subject training of future teachers of foreign language are considered. The specific features of control and assessment of productive speech tasks of oral and written speech at the modern stage and before the transition to the competency-based, communicative and personal-activity approaches are compared. The results of the experimental work of using the criteria-based assessment during the current control in the conditions of teaching students - future teachers of the discipline “Practice of oral and written speech” in Volgograd State Socio-Pedagogical University are given.
