The issue of professional orientation of students of natural-science training programmes and the role of pedagogical diagnostics in this educational process are considered. There is shown the methodology of pedagogical diagnostics on the basis of the representation of tasks, examining the personality orientation which includes motivation. The potential of various diagnostic tasks for the use in the process of professional self-determination of students of natural-science training programmes is substantiated.
