The article deals with the study of the potential of the use of the cognitive and activity approach to the organization of the extracurricular reading in the university. The approach to teaching the profession-oriented foreign language reading is implemented by the solution of the psychological, linguodidactic and sociocultural tasks. There is emphasized the rising of the motivation of the students to the individual cognitive activity by the inclusion of the explicit education of the metacognitive regulation.
