The article is devoted to the problem of “native language”, considered in pedagogical discussions in the second half of the 19 th century. During dominance of classical education the question inevitably arose in the Russian pedagogy, i.e. how to save national culture with the help of the native language. The solution of this problem was connected with compulsory studying of the Russian language, in which pedagogues found the main means of moral education of the Russian nation.
