The article deals with the specification of the content of the concept “learner’s autonomy” in the process of mastering the speech skills of the schoolchildren considering the specific features of the discipline “Foreign language”, the new requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard of Basic General Education, the current methodological concepts and strategies of the autonomous education. The analysis of the evolution of the definition allowed to substantiate the key characteristics of the autonomous education and to identify the complex of the speech skills, the formation of which supports the development of the autonomous personality.
