The article is devoted to the description of the thematic field “Light” in the text of the translated monument of Byzantine teaching literature – “Ladder” of John Climacus. The lexemes included in the core of this thematic field are identified, and the features of the functioning of the key lexeme (“свѣтъ”) in the text of the monument are considered based the material of the oldest Russian manuscript that preserved the first Slavic translation of the monument. 35 examples of the functioning of the lexeme “свѣтъ” in the text of the monument were found: 4 in the meaning of ‘light as a physical phenomenon’, 6 in the meaning of ‘dawn’ and 25 in the meaning of ‘spiritual light’. The following components of the figurative meaning of the lexeme “свѣтъ” have been revealed: 1) uncreated light, 2) carriers of uncreated light, 3) spiritual power, 4) eyes, 5) reason, 6) truth, 7) hope. The meanings ‘eyes’ and ‘hope’ are not reflected in the dictionary entry “свѣтъ” in the Dictionary of the Russian Language of the 11th–17th Centuries. The core of the thematic field includes vocabulary denoting the ability to reason, i.e. internal, spiritual vision, as well as expressions whose meaning is the loss of this vision. In addition, the theme of “Light” in the Ladder is verbalized by lexemes denoting natural phenomena. 20 cognate lexeme of “свѣтъ” are named, the number of their word usages in the text of the manuscript is indicated. 9 lexemes are indicated that have not yet been recorded in the dictionaries of the Old Russian and Old Church Slavonic languages. The main meaning of the lexeme светъ is revealed, namely ‘spiritual light’, or ‘that which makes life joyful, happy’, ‘that which gives meaning to life’; this meaning in the “Ladder” is always associated with the presence of the Divine principle.
