With the growth in the number of international trips every year, the need to learn foreign languages, especially English, is increasing. People traveling abroad often face the need to communicate with local residents, be able to request information or solve problems that arise. The recognition of English as one of the most common languages on the planet is confirmed by the fact that more than 1.5 billion people speak it. This situation underscores the key role of English in the field of tourism and its impact on expanding opportunities for travel [2].
In addition, learning English significantly increases the chances of career growth. Knowledge of English is becoming not just an advantage, but a necessity in the face of growing competition in the labor market. Fluency in the language opens doors to international companies and contributes to the establishment of business contacts. Thus, learning English not only facilitates travel, but also serves as the basis for a successful career in the future [3].
Given these factors, language technologies, such as mobile applications and online courses, have numerically increased in the modern market. The development of mobile applications focused on learning English allows tourists to learn effectively at a convenient time and place. These resources offer interactive learning methods that take into account the different levels of knowledge of users and their personal needs. The specificity of such applications involves the use of a game approach, which makes the process of learning a language more exciting and not so tedious [4].
The use of digital technologies is not limited to mobile applications. Online courses, covering a variety of topics, from basic vocabulary to specialized phrases for tourists, provide users with the opportunity to learn under the guidance of experienced teachers at any time. These courses can include live interaction, which creates conditions for a deeper immersion in the language. Many platforms offer a variety of learning formats – from video lessons to live broadcasts with experts, which only increases the availability of quality language for foreign tourists [5].
Learning English is becoming an accessible and chaotic process, thanks to which both beginners and more experienced travelers can increase their confidence in the international arena. At the same time, it is important to understand that the learning process itself is not an end in itself, but only one of the means to achieve more large-scale life and professional goals. As a result, tourism is expanding its borders every year and, therefore, requires travelers to be increasingly prepared to interact with the surrounding culture and population.
Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors of the global economy. With the increase in the number of tourists, the need for communication in English, which occupies a dominant position as an international language of communication, is growing. For tourists, knowledge of English not only expands the boundaries of a comfortable trip, but also significantly increases the level of personal safety. Familiarization with the basic phrases and words necessary for the trip allows you to minimize the emerging language barriers and contributes to a better interaction with local residents [6].
Despite the importance of communication skills in English, many tourists face certain difficulties in the learning process. One of the main problems is the lack of a language environment, which is essential for the practical application of knowledge. Without regular communication with native speakers, even minimal skills are quickly forgotten. In situations requiring a quick response, for example, in the event of unforeseen circumstances, tourists often find themselves in a difficult situation due to an insufficient vocabulary [7].
Learning English for tourists requires not only theoretical knowledge, but also practical application. The use of modern language applications and online courses provides an opportunity to improve communication skills, however, problems may arise due to the wrong choice of software or courses. Often, tourists choose courses without comparing their goals and the content of the course, which can lead to ineffective training [8]. In addition, some applications do not always take into account the specific needs of tourists, such as learning phrases needed in hotels, restaurants or public transport.
Cultural differences also play a significant role in the language learning process. Knowledge of only grammatical structures and vocabulary may not be sufficient for adequate perception and understanding of local realities. Peculiarities of accents and dialects can further complicate communication and affect the tourist’s confidence [9]. For example, even with good skills in “general” English, a tourist may have difficulty understanding regional accents, which in turn creates additional barriers to communication.
A separate problem is the fear of making mistakes and being misunderstood. In the process of communicating with local residents, many tourists may feel uncomfortable due to their accent or incorrect use of the language, which can lead to a significant decrease in motivation to learn. This fear is sometimes so great that people prefer to avoid communication, which makes learning English ineffective [10]. Thus, it is important not only to understand the basics of the language, but also to apply them in practice, overcoming the fear of making mistakes.
Before traveling, it is a good practice to strengthen existing knowledge, especially focusing on phrases needed in specific situations. There are recommendations for organizing independent studies that can greatly increase confidence in communication. Using a situational approach, where language learning is based on scenarios typical for tourists, helps create mental associations and improve pronunciation and speech comprehension skills [6]. This allows the tourist to adapt to the language environment more comfortably, as well as improve the overall tourist experience. Learning English for tourists is a complex and multifaceted process that needs attention both at the planning stage of the trip and during the trip itself. Knowing English not only helps in solving everyday tasks, a key factor allows you to not only enjoy the trip, but also get the most out of it. By combining various teaching methods and communication practices, tourists can significantly increase their confidence and comfort while traveling [8].
Modern language applications offer a variety of methods and approaches to learning English, which is especially relevant for tourists seeking to improve their communication skills. One of the popular applications is Puzzle English, which allows you to customize the level of difficulty of the lessons. This provides an opportunity to adapt the training to your own needs, which is convenient both for self-study and for supplementing traditional courses [11].
Memrise stands out by offering interactive scenarios and videos, as well as focusing on expanding vocabulary. This approach makes language learning more engaging and dynamic, which can increase user interest and motivate them to further learning [13]. Duolingo, in turn, uses game elements and short lessons, which is especially suitable for beginner tourists who are just starting to learn English [12].
Communicating with native speakers is an important aspect of language learning, and here the Busuu application provides a unique opportunity, allowing users to interact with native English speakers in a mini-social network. This creates an atmosphere of practice and exchange of experience, which can significantly increase the confidence of tourists in communication [15]. Lingodeer is suitable for beginners, offering fascinating lessons that focus on grammar and vocabulary, which is necessary for those who want to quickly and effectively master basic skills [14].
Technologies also emphasize ease of use. For example, applications like Knudge.me are focused on preparing for exams and tests, which is especially relevant for tourists planning to participate in language tests before traveling [12]. Bright plays on the strengths of games and visual effects, allowing users to quickly expand their vocabulary in a relaxed and entertaining way [11].
Do not forget about the resources available on the YouTube platform, such as the Learn English with Ronnie channels and others, which provide free lessons and tips. This is an additional and useful source for language learners, providing access to educational materials anytime and anywhere [11].
FluentU uses video content to teach language, providing users with the opportunity to learn through material that they may find interesting and relevant. This method can increase the level of engagement, as students can interact with the cultural context of the language, which contributes to a deeper understanding [15]. Tandem offers a unique space for communication, where users can practice speaking skills with native speakers, which is especially useful for tourists who want to improve their skills in live communication [14].
Resources such as Business English Pod are aimed at professionals and include materials related to business English, which may be useful for tourists planning business trips [13]. VOA Learning English provides news and updates with clear pronunciation, allowing language learners to adapt to the modern use of the language.
As a result, language applications provide a wide range of training, adapting to different levels and goals of users. These tools can significantly help tourists in preparing for trips, improving their communication skills and confidence in communication, which in turn enriches the tourist experience [15].
In recent years, online courses have become an important tool for learning English, especially among tourists seeking to improve their communication skills in an international environment. These courses offer a variety of formats and teaching methods, making them accessible to a wide audience. The variety of training programs allows you to meet the needs of students with different levels of training, from beginners to more advanced.
An analysis of online courses shows that most of them are focused on interactive methods and practical use of the language, which is especially important for tourists who need real language skills. For example, many courses offer scenario games and role-playing exercises where students can play out situations they may encounter while traveling. This allows you to improve not only speaking skills, but also confidence when communicating with native speakers [16].
In addition, many online courses offer video materials, which is useful for listening comprehension. Visual and audiovisual elements help students better assimilate vocabulary and grammar. Video and multimedia materials allow you to create a context in which the language is used in real life, which facilitates the learning process [17].
Some platforms combine video lessons with chats and forums for language practice with other students or teachers. This creates an opportunity for interaction and exchange of experience, which, as practice shows, significantly increases the motivation of students. In particular, this form of interaction is useful for tourists, as they can communicate with other students from different countries, expanding their knowledge of language and culture [14].
Courses from scratch are an excellent opportunity for beginners to learn the language at their own pace. These programs often include adapted curricula that help beginners gradually master the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary necessary for tourist needs. For example, many courses focus on topics such as restaurant service, hotel reservations, and descriptions of attractions, which is critical for tourists [14].
If we consider quality metrics, there are many platforms that offer ratings and reviews of online courses, which can help potential students choose the right option. Ratings are based on user reviews, so they can give an idea of the real experience of previous students and help avoid ineffective courses [10].
Using mobile applications together with online courses can significantly enhance the learning process. The integration of technologies allows tourists to learn on the go: anytime and anywhere. This is especially important during travel, when a full-fledged lesson may be difficult. The ability to get instant answers to questions or take short vocabulary tests directly on your smartphone makes the learning process more flexible and adaptable to the student’s schedule [16].
Undoubtedly, online courses and language applications form a diverse approach to learning English, contributing to a more active involvement of students and increasing their language competence. With the help of modern technologies, travelers have the opportunity to communicate and interact with local residents more confidently, receiving from trips not only new experiences, but also an indispensable experience of communication in a foreign language.
The emergence of digital technologies has significantly changed the approach of tourists to planning trips and interacting with cultural and entertainment offers. One of the main advantages of using technological solutions has been the increased confidence of travelers in the success of their expectations and readiness to cope with language barriers. With the help of mobile applications and online platforms, tourists get access to information and services anywhere in the world, which makes the travel process more comfortable and less stressful [14].
As digital marketing grows in popularity, travel app and online service developers are striving to provide users with as much information as possible about destinations, available routes, and cultural features. This not only helps to plan trips more consciously, but also creates a sense of control over the situation, which in turn increases the confidence of tourists [5]. For example, the ability to read reviews from other travelers, receive recommendations on local attractions and restaurants, and manage bookings through their smartphones creates a sense of security and helps to avoid unforeseen situations.
A key element contributing to confident tourist behavior is language applications, which unlock access to communication with local residents. Translation services, including voice and text translators, make interaction possible without the need to know the language of the country. This is especially true for those who prefer individual trips rather than standard tours, as such freedom of movement is often associated with language difficulties [17]. Thus, thanks to modern technologies, moments such as asking questions in the local language or being able to explain one’s needs are no longer a cause for stress.
The integration of technology into processes related to travel contributes to the creation of a more personalized experience. For example, the use of artificial intelligence in applications allows you to offer routes based on the user’s preferences and interests. This makes each trip unique, which increases the satisfaction of tourists and their confidence that they have chosen the right path [13]. The ability to customize your plans and adapt to changing conditions also creates a sense of comfort, allowing people to feel more confident in any situation.
Technologies also provide the ability to obtain up-to-date information about the situation in the country of destination, which is an important aspect for tourists in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this period, travelers became particularly susceptible to changes in safety rules and recommendations. Understanding the current context, as a rule, helps to reduce anxiety and promotes more confident actions [9]. Awareness that information can be obtained quickly and reliably from various sources increases confidence in one’s own choices.
Thus, the impact of digital technologies on the confidence of tourists is manifested through many aspects, ranging from improving travel planning to providing access to important information. The use of innovative solutions not only makes travel more comfortable, but also opens up new horizons for exploring cultural differences, which ultimately contributes to a deeper understanding of the world and increased competitiveness of the tourism industry [8]. Each booking, each consultation, and each application become steps on which tourists can confidently build their travels, and additional opportunities contribute to creating a positive image of both the tourist and the industry as a whole.
An important aspect of optimizing the process of learning English for tourists is conducting a comparative analysis of learning outcomes before and after the introduction of digital technologies. This applies to both language applications and online courses that help improve foreign language communication skills.
Research shows that the use of language applications such as Duolingo or Babbel contributes to a significant improvement in language skills, especially in terms of vocabulary and grammar. Survey participants involved in training noted an increase in confidence in using the language in tourist situations after several weeks of regular classes through such platforms [14]. Applications often include game elements, which makes the learning process more fun. Game mechanics, for example, can unobtrusively push the user to repeat and consolidate the material studied, which is especially useful for tourists seeking to quickly learn the necessary phrases and words.
Online courses, on the other hand, provide more structured classes, including interactive webinars and classes with teachers. Studies conducted to analyze the effectiveness of online formats have shown that thanks to video lessons and live interaction with teachers, students achieve better results compared to selfstudy. This dynamic was noted in studies showing that online course participants demonstrated better material assimilation, improved pronunciation, and the ability to conduct dialogues in practice [12].
A comparative analysis of the results, conducted on the basis of studying the achievements of students before the start of using digital technologies and after, shows that students who used applications and online resources express a higher degree of satisfaction with their progress. As a rule, such students better understand grammar and vocabulary, which leads to an increase in their confidence in using English in real tourist situations [16].
In addition, studies show that courses that include elements of cultural integration significantly increase motivation and interest in learning the language. Students who are presented with aspects of the culture of countries where English is the main language report a greater desire to communicate and regularly use the language, which makes the learning process more effective. However, it is important to take into account that the organization of courses and the chosen teaching methods also overlap the results, since uncontrolled factors, such as individual learning preferences and style of information perception, can significantly affect the results [3].
Research shows that comfort in using the language depends not only on grammatical skills, but also on the frustration that arises during learning. The use of various digital platforms can significantly reduce the fear of mistakes and failures, which is associated with the possibility of correction and learning from mistakes within web applications. This leads to the fact that students confidently begin to apply their knowledge in real situations, without fear of condemnation or criticism from native speakers [5].
Thus, digital technologies significantly affect the quality of English language learning, showing positive changes in confidence and practical communication skills among tourists. It is important to note that further research can help deepen the understanding of how to improve learning by providing more adapted and interactive learning formats. Adapting learning methods to technological changes is becoming a key success factor for many travelers seeking to confidently communicate in English.
The effective use of digital technologies in the process of learning English plays an important role in the education of tourists. Modern electronic educational resources (EER) should be carefully designed taking into account educational goals and functionality requirements. This will ensure active student involvement and help develop speaking and writing skills [11]. Tourists seeking to improve their English can use a variety of online resources and mobile applications that allow them to integrate the language into their daily lives. For example, the use of websites and applications restores the connection between formal and informal learning, providing an opportunity to practice the language at any time [3].
It is important for teachers to integrate information and communication technologies (ICT) into the educational process, which will create more interactive and engaging conditions for students. This not only changes the role of the teacher – he becomes a mentor and assistant in self-education [8]. It is also worth noting that the use of digital tools contributes to increasing student activity and the formation of their communicative competencies, which greatly facilitates the process of material assimilation [14].
Tourists can choose applications and platforms that offer a personalized approach to learning. This is critical, as there is no universal methodology that suits everyone. Education methodologies should be adapted to the needs and characteristics of each student to ensure maximum results [14]. In addition, the use of ICT may vary among different groups of tourists, depending on their initial level of knowledge, learning goals, and resource availability [10].
The most popular applications for learning English include resources that offer interactive tasks and instant feedback. Such platforms allow you to learn not only through individual exercises, but also through interaction with other users, which significantly increases the level of involvement and motivation [14]. Online resources can include video lessons, podcasts, and various multimedia tools that allow you to effectively learn the language, based on real-life circumstances.
One of the key aspects of successful learning is the opportunity to study a language in an environment close to real-world conditions. Digital technologies allow tourists to immerse themselves in the language environment through authentic materials and tasks that are directly related to their future travels. This can include not only vocabulary learning but also practicing dialogues necessary for communication in various tourism-related situations [2].
One should also not forget the need for constant practice. Many tourists may be interested in learning a language, but lack of time is a serious obstacle. Language apps provide the opportunity to learn at a convenient time, as well as repeat material adaptively, depending on the speed of assimilation [3]. This approach to learning helps increase users’ confidence in their ability to communicate in a foreign language while traveling.
Thus, to achieve the best results in learning English for tourists, it is necessary to consider not only the availability of technology but also its integration into daily practice. The application of methodological recommendations on the implementation of ICT will help create an effective educational environment that promotes not only language acquisition but also the development of the overall language culture of students [3].
In conclusion, it can be confidently stated that the impact of digital technologies on learning English for tourists is significant and multifaceted. In the context of globalization and the active growth of international tourism, knowledge of English is becoming not just desirable but a necessary condition for successful interaction with local residents, gaining positive experiences, and fully immersing oneself in the culture of the country that tourists visit. A comparison of language learning results before and after the use of digital technologies also showed positive dynamics. Most study participants noted an improvement in their communication skills, which, in turn, contributed to a more comfortable and fulfilling tourist experience. This emphasizes the importance of integrating digital technologies into the language learning process, especially for people who are planning trips. Thus, digital technologies open up new horizons for learning English for tourists, making the learning process more accessible, flexible, and interactive.
