В статье авторы анализируют основные вехи в истории российско-норвежской границы, выделяя три ключевых этапа: 1) Средние века и раннее Новое время − это период существования фронтирной зоны и общего фискального округа, постепенно сокращающихся в процессе проникновения государства на Север; 2) советский период с почти герметичной государственной границей; 3) современный период, отличающийся интеграционными процессами, прозрачными границами и инициативами по созданию современных форм «общего округа».
