Images of the Indomitable Spirit: Wartime Art as a Tool for Preserving Historical Memory: Book Review: Sokolova, A. N. (ed.) (2025) Iskusstvo i voyna. Etyudy o kul’turnoy pamyati [Art and War: Studies on Cultural Memory]. Maykop: Adyghe State University Press. 130 p.

This review examines a recently published collective monograph, produced by a team of authors under the editorship of A.N. Sokolova, which presents a scholarly investigation into the phenomenon of the Great Patriotic War and its impact on Soviet and contemporary Russian cultural space. The reviewer emphasizes that the work transcends conventional socio-political analysis, with its authors raising fundamental questions concerning the nature of war, its destructive force, its inevitability or potential preventability, and the inadequacy of traditional conceptions of military conflict for its eradication. Particular attention is devoted to the concept of Victory as the dominant metanarrative of military discourse. The reviewer systematically elucidates the content of the monograph, highlighting its multifaceted character. Considerable space within the volume is allocated to the examination of commemorative practices, which are conceptualized as instruments for the constitution of historical truth. The authors' attention to the study of commemorative practices and the creative biographies of cultural figures who departed for the front, as well as the transformation of their life trajectories, is noted. It is further emphasized that even under the most severe conditions, cultural life persisted—theaters opened, new works on military-patriotic themes were created, thereby contributing to the spiritual mobilization of the populace. A distinct section of the review addresses materials pertaining to the North Caucasus and Adygea. The reviewer commends the integration into scholarly discourse of the creative biographies of composers, artists, and writers from the region. Differences in artists' perceptions of the war are elucidated. In the reviewer's assessment, the authors succeed in demonstrating that the art of the war years and subsequent decades constituted a crucial resource for commemoration, enabling the formation of shared narratives that unite people around the memory of heroic deeds. The enduring significance of the Soviet people's consolidating potential, as documented in works of art, is emphasized as a foundation of contemporary Russian society's cultural and historical memory. The reviewer concludes that the preservation and development of commemorative practices, together with the integration of war-related artistic works into the moral and patriotic education of youth, represent pressing contemporary tasks—and that the publication under review contributes to this process.
