Статья научная

A new information technology for plant communities monitoring using remote sensing data, oriented for application at the regional level, is proposed. The technology is based on maintaining a base of reference polygons, accumulating data on the boundaries of specific plant communities and related semantic information. This database provides a source of verified and up-to-date information for solving problems of rational nature management. To expand the database of reference polygons, two algorithms for finding new ones are presented: a reliable algorithm (analyzing several growing seasons) and an urgent algorithm (based on the current growing season). The advantage of the proposed system is the integration of data storage, processing, and analysis, which enables the automation of the creation of new and the monitoring of existing polygons, as well as the solution of a wide range of problems based on remote sensing data and artificial intelligence algorithms. Practical tasks in studying of phytocenoses in the Samara Region, implemented using the proposed monitoring technology, are considered: updating forest inventory data, monitoring the status of a rare reintroduced species (Paeonia Tenuifolia), searching for new reference polygons across a vast territory of several steppe protected areas, and searching for areas of presence of an invasive plant species (Elaeagnus angustifolia L).

Breast cancer is one of the most dreaded diseases that affects women worldwide and has led to many deaths. Early detection of breast masses prolongs life expectancy in women and hence the development of an automated system for breast masses supports radiologists for accurate diagnosis. In fact, providing an optimal approach with the highest speed and more accuracy is an approach provided by computer-aided design techniques to determine the exact area of breast tumors to use a decision support management system as an assistant to physicians. This study proposes an optimal approach to noise reduction in mammographic images and to identify salt and pepper, Gaussian, Poisson and impact noises to determine the exact mass detection operation after these noise reduction. It therefore offers a method for noise reduction operations called Quantum Inverse MFT Filtering and a method for precision mass segmentation called the Optimal Social Spider Algorithm (SSA) in mammographic images. The hybrid approach called QIMFT-SSA is evaluated in terms of criteria compared to previous methods such as peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean-Squared Error (MSE) in noise reduction and accuracy of detection for mass area recognition. The proposed method presents more performance of noise reduction and segmentation in comparison to state-of-arts methods. supported the work.

On the automation of gestalt perception in remotely sensed data

On the automation of gestalt perception in remotely sensed data

Michaelsen Eckart

Статья научная

Gestalt perception, the laws of seeing, and perceptual grouping is rarely addressed in the con-text of remotely sensed imagery. The paper at hand reviews the corresponding state as well in ma-chine vision as in remote sensing, in particular concerning urban areas. Automatic methods can be separated into three types: 1) knowledge-based inference, which needs machine-readable knowl-edge, 2) automatic learning methods, which require labeled or un-labeled example images, and 3) perceptual grouping along the lines of the laws of seeing, which should be pre-coded and should work on any kind of imagery, but in particular on urban aerial or satellite data. Perceptual group-ing of parts into aggregates is a combinatorial problem. Exhaustive enumeration of all combina-tions is intractable. The paper at hand presents a constant-false-alarm-rate search rationale. An open problem is the choice of the extraction method for the primitive objects to start with. Here super-pixel-segmentation is used.

Статья научная

Triplet loss function is one of the options that can significantly improve the accuracy of the One-shot Learning tasks. Starting from 2015, many projects use Siamese networks and this kind of loss for face recognition and object classification. In our research, we focused on two tasks related to vegetation. The first one is plant disease detection on 25 classes of five crops (grape, cotton, wheat, cucumbers, and corn). This task is motivated because harvest losses due to diseases is a serious problem for both large farming structures and rural families. The second task is the identification of moss species (5 classes). Mosses are natural bioaccumulators of pollutants; therefore, they are used in environmental monitoring programs. The identification of moss species is an important step in the sample preprocessing. In both tasks, we used self-collected image databases. We tried several deep learning architectures and approaches. Our Siamese network architecture with a triplet loss function and MobileNetV2 as a base network showed the most impressive results in both above-mentioned tasks. The average accuracy for plant disease detection amounted to over 97.8 % and 97.6 % for moss species classification.

Статья научная

The tracking-by-detection paradigm is widely used for people multi-object tracking tasks. Up to now, there exist many detectors and trackers, many evaluation benchmarks, which necessitates the use of relatively uniform estimation methods and metrics. It leads to necessity to choose better combined models of detectors and trackers. To solve this task, we developed a comprehensive performance evaluation methodology for estimation of people tracking accuracy and real-time by using different detectors and trackers. We conducted experiments by choosing the official pre-trained models of YOLOv5, YOLOv6, YOLOv7, YOLOv8 with representative BoTSORT, ByteTrack, DeepOCSORT, OCSORT, StrongSORT trackers under two benchmarks of MOT17 and MOT20. Detailed metrics in terms of error and speed such as higher order tracking accuracy and frames per second were analyzed for the combinations of detectors and trackers. It is concluded that the OCSORT+YOLOv6l model has the best comprehensive performance and the combination of OCSORT and YOLOv7 has the best average performance under MOT17 and MOT20.

The unique plateau geographical features and variable weather of Yunnan, China make transmission lines in this region more susceptible to coverage and damage by various foreign bodies compared to flat areas. The mountainous terrain also presents great challenges for inspecting and removing such objects. In order to improve the efficiency and detection accuracy of foreign body inspection of transmission lines, we propose a multi-UAV collaborative system specifically designed for the geographical characteristics of Yunnan's transmission lines in this paper. Additionally, the image data of foreign bodies was augmented, and the YOLOv7 target detection model, which offers a more balanced trade-off between precision and speed, was adopted to improve the accuracy and speed of foreign body detection.

Crop growth is one of the most important parameters of a crop and its knowledge before harvest is essential to help farmers, scientists, governments and agribusiness. This paper provides a novel demonstration of the use of freely available Sentinel-2 data to estimate rice crop growth in a single year. Sentinel 2 data provides frequent and consistent information to facilitate coastal monitoring from field scales. The aims of this study were to modify the rice growth vegetation index to improve rice growth phenology in the coastal areas. The rice growth vegetation index 2 is the best vegetation index, compared with 11 vegetation indices, plant height and biomass. The results demonstrate that the coefficient of rice growth vegetation index 2 was 0.83, has the highest correlation with plant height. Rice growth vegetation index 2 is more appropriate for enhancing and obtaining rice phenology information. This study analyses the best spectral vegetation indices for estimating rice growth.

Статья научная

Traffic sign recognition is a well-researched problem in computer vision. However, the state of the art methods works only for frequent sign classes, which are well represented in training datasets. We consider the task of rare traffic sign detection and classification. We aim to solve that problem by using synthetic training data. Such training data is obtained by embedding synthetic images of signs in the real photos. We propose three methods for making synthetic signs consistent with a scene in appearance. These methods are based on modern generative adversarial network (GAN) architectures. Our proposed methods allow realistic embedding of rare traffic sign classes that are absent in the training set. We adapt a variational autoencoder for sampling plausible locations of new traffic signs in images. We demonstrate that using a mixture of our synthetic data with real data improves the accuracy of both classifier and detector.

Robust hybrid technique for moving object detection and tracking using cartoon features and fast PCP

Robust hybrid technique for moving object detection and tracking using cartoon features and fast PCP

Jeevith S.H., Lakshmikanth S.

Статья научная

In various computer vision applications, the moving object detection is an essential step. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) techniques are often used for this purpose. However, the performance of this method is degraded by camera shake, hidden moving objects, dynamic background scenes, and / or fluctuating exposure. Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) is a useful approach for reducing stationary background noise as it can recover low rank matrices. That is, moving object is formed by the low power models and the static background of RPCA. This paper proposes a simple alternative minimization algorithm to fix minor discrepancies in the original Principal Component Pursuit (PCP) or RPCA function. A novel hybrid method of cartoon texture features used as a data matrix for RPCA taking into account low-ranking and rare matrix is presented. A new non-convex function is proposed to better control the low-range properties of the video background. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is capable of giving consistent random estimates and can indeed improve the accuracy of object recognition in comparison with existing methods.

Screen recapture detection based on color-texture analysis of document boundary regions

Kunina I.A., Sher A.V., Nikolaev D.P.

Статья научная

This paper examines a presentation attack detection when a document recaptured from a screen is presented instead of the original document. We propose an algorithm based on analyzing a moiré pattern within document boundary regions as a distinctive feature of the recaptured image. It is assumed that the pattern overlapping the document boundaries is a recapture artifact, not a match between document and background textures. To detect such a pattern, we propose an algorithm that employs the result of the fast Hough transform of the document boundary regions with enhanced pattern contrast. The algorithm performance was measured for the open dataset DLC-2021, which contains images of mock documents as originals and their screen recaptures. The precision of the proposed solution was evaluated as 95.4 %, and the recall as 90.5 %.

Статья научная

3D mesh segmentation has become an essential step in many applications in 3D shape analysis. In this paper, a new segmentation method is proposed based on a learning approach using the artificial neural networks classifier and the spectral clustering for segmentation. Firstly, a training step is done using the artificial neural network trained on existing segmentation, taken from the ground truth segmentation (done by humane operators) available in the benchmark proposed by Chen et al. to extract the candidate boundaries of a given 3D-model based on a set of geometric criteria. Then, we use this resulted knowledge to construct a new connectivity of the mesh and use the spectral clustering method to segment the 3D mesh into significant parts. Our approach was evaluated using different evaluation metrics. The experiments confirm that the proposed method yields significantly good results and outperforms some of the competitive segmentation methods in the literature.

Segmentation of Earth remote sensing images based on agglomerative pixel clustering using the minimum increment of the total squared error as a decision function

Among cluster analysis methods applied to grayscale image segmentation, Arifin's algorithm is particularly notable. This algorithm enables partitioning the original image into a number of clusters ranging from N_max to 1 in linear time, where N_max represents the number of grayscale levels in the original image. Arifin's algorithm incrementally enlarges pixel clusters by combining a "minimum pair" at each iteration within the calculation cycle, characterized by the minimum distance Dist between clusters. The original method calculates Dist by taking the product of interclass and intraclass variances; however, this approach involves cumbersome formulas and lacks a quality assessment for the resulting partitions. This study introduces two modifications to Arifin's algorithm that simplify the calculation of Dist for identifying "minimum pairs" and performing cluster merging sequences, while also enabling evaluation of cluster partition quality. The first modification uses the increment of the total squared error as a distance function for Dist, whereas the second modification employs partial entropy. In the first approach, partition quality is evaluated based on the total squared error or standard deviation, while in the second, it is assessed by the information content. A computer program has been developed to implement the first modification of Arifin's algorithm, incorporating a difference formula to compute partition quality. This program has been tested using standard test images of various sizes, including full-scale aerospace images (three images at 1024×1024 pixels and one at 2050×2050 pixels). The practical significance of the modification, which leverages the increment of the total squared error to create a series of suboptimal piecewise-constant partitions, lies in reducing the number of operations per cycle needed to determine the "minimum pair" among all adjacent clusters, thereby halving processor time.

Статья

Melanoma skin cancer is one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer because it grows fast and causes most of the skin cancer deaths. Hence, early detection is a very important task to treat melanoma. In this article, we propose a skin lesion segmentation method for dermoscopic images based on the U-Net architecture with VGG-16 encoder and the semantic segmentation. Base on the segmented skin lesion, diagnostic imaging systems can evaluate skin lesion features to classify them. The proposed method requires fewer resources for training, and it is suitable for computing systems without powerful GPUs, but the training accuracy is still high enough (above 95 %). In the experiments, we train the model on the ISIC dataset – a common dermoscopic image dataset. To assess the performance of the proposed skin lesion segmentation method, we evaluate the Sorensen-Dice and the Jaccard scores and compare to other deep learning-based skin lesion segmentation methods. Experimental results showed that skin lesion segmentation quality of the proposed method are better than ones of the compared methods.

Solving the boundary artifact for the enhanced deconvolution algorithm suppose applied to fluorescence microscopy

Solving the boundary artifact for the enhanced deconvolution algorithm suppose applied to fluorescence microscopy

Статья научная

The SUPPOSe enhanced deconvolution algorithm relies in assuming that the image source can be described by an incoherent superposition of virtual point sources of equal intensity and finding the number and position of such virtual sources. In this work we describe the recent advances in the implementation of the method to gain resolution and remove artifacts due to the presence of fluorescent molecules close enough to the image frame boundary. The method was modified removing the invariant used before given by the product of the flux of the virtual sources times the number of virtual sources, and replacing it by a new invariant given by the total flux within the frame, thus allowing the location of virtual sources outside the frame but contributing to the signal inside the frame.

Super-resolution microscopy based on interpolation and wide spectrum de-noising

Super-resolution microscopy based on interpolation and wide spectrum de-noising

Cheng T., Chenchen T.

Статья научная

In the conventional single-molecule localizations and super-resolution microscopy, the pixel size of a raw image is approximately equal to the standard deviation of the point spread function. Such a raw image is referred to herein as a conventional raw image, based on which better single molecule localization effect and efficiency can be achieved. It is found that both interpolation and de-noising can effectively improve the Signal to Noise Ratio of the conventional raw image. The conventional raw image, the de-noised, the interpolated and the de-noised interpolated are compared and analyzed and compressed sensing is used for super-resolution reconstruction. The simulation results show that both the highest Signal to Noise Ratio and the best super-resolution reconstruction can be obtained by de-noising the interpolated conventional raw image. This method also renders the best super-resolution reconstruction and minimum gradient in the real experiment. De-noising the interpolated conventional raw image is an effective method to improve the super-resolution microscopy.

Super-resolution microscopy based on wide spectrum denoising and compressed sensing

Cheng Tao, Jin Hu

Статья научная

WSD can effectively remove random noise of a raw image from very low density to ultra-high density fluorescent molecular distribution scenarios. The size of the raw image that WSD can denoise is subject to the used measurement matrix. A large raw image must be divided into blocks so that WSD denoises each block separately. Based on traditional single-molecule localization and super-resolution reconstruction scenarios, wide spectrum denoising (WSD) for blocks of different sizes was studied. The denoising ability is related to block sizes. The general trend is when the block gets larger, the denoising effect gets worse. When the block size is equal to 10, the denoising effect is the best. Using compressed sensing, only 20 raw images are needed for reconstruction. The temporal resolution is less than half a second. The spatial resolution is also greatly improved.

Switching median filter for suppressing multi-pixel impulse noise

Switching median filter for suppressing multi-pixel impulse noise

Trubitsyn Andrey Afanasievich, Grachev Evgeny Yurievich

Статья научная

This paper proposes a new switching median filter for suppressing multi-pixel impulse noise in X-ray images. A multi-pixel impulse is understood as a set of several neighboring pixels, the intensity of each significantly exceeds background intensity. Multi-pixel noise can occur, for example, due to the blooming effect, the reason being the limited value of pixel saturation capacity. This article defines the thresholds for the intensity increment relative to the eight immediate neighbors, above which the current pixel is processed by the median filter. The dependence of these thresholds on the number of pixels in an impulse is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on the median filtering process, which consists of several iterations. In this case, the filter has the smallest possible size, which minimizes image distortion during processing. In particular, to exclude a single-pixel impulse, pixel processing is turned on when intensity surge exceeds 3.5 with the grayscale value ranging from 0 to 1. At the same time, to exclude nine-pixel impulses, three iterations are required with the following thresholds: the first iteration with a threshold 2.0; the second iteration also with a threshold 2.0 and the third iteration with a threshold 3.5. The algorithm proposed was tested on real X-ray images corrupted by multi-pixel impulse noise. The algorithm is not only simple, but also reliable and suitable for real-time implementation and application. The efficiency of the technique is shown in comparison with other known filtering methods with respect to the degree of noise suppression. The main result of the testing is that only the proposed method allows excluding multi-pixel noise. Other advantage of the algorithm is its weak effect on the level of Gaussian noise leading to the absence of image blurring (or preserving image details) during processing.
