This article of reflection aims to draw attention to how poorly designed language evaluations may have negative consequences if key requirements and technical requirements are not met. The fundamental characteristics for effective language assessments are initially covered in the article. Then, as an example and to demonstrate the degree of complexity in test design, instructions for developing test assessments are provided.
