Dialectical Interpretation of the Doctrine of the Son’s Hypostasis in the Works by A. F. Losev

This article examines the meaning of the concepts of “Being,” “Intelligence,” and “triune Meaning,” which relate to the second principle of the Triad, in the works of A. F. Losev, particularly in “The Ancient Cosmos and Modern Science” and “The Dialectics of Myth with Supplement.” It also provides a comparative analysis of A. F. Losev’s triadological views with the theology of the great Cappadocians in the context of the doctrine of the second Hypostasis of the Holy Trinity — God the Son. In this study, the author discovers that in his early works, A. F. Losev uncritically transfers the philosophical principles of Neoplatonism into the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. However, the merit of his mature works is the philosophical development of the concepts of “Being” and “Intelligence,” in which the Christian principle of the consubstantiality of the Hypostases clearly emerges. The author concludes that “Being” and “Intelligence” in A. F. Losev’s works represent a philosophical image of the Hypostasis of the Son, the study and understanding of which contributes to a deeper knowledge of the theology of the great Cappadocians, who widely applied Neoplatonic concepts in expressing Christian doctrinal truths.
