Impact of Perceived Research-Based Teacher Education on the Perceived Research Competence of Pre-Service Teachers

Miha Matjašič, Janez Vogrinc

Статья обзорная

This study examines the impact of perceived research-based teacher education on the development of pre-service teachers’ perceived research competence. A new instrument was developed to measure perceived research-based teacher education at the programme level, capturing aspects such as participation in faculty-led research projects, opportunities for dissemination of results and involvement in the institutional research culture. The data were collected from 234 master’s students enrolled in Slovenian teacher education programmes. Participants completed a questionnaire that assessed both perceived research-based teacher education and three dimensions of perceived research competence: perceived research knowledge, perceived research skills and research attitudes. The results showed that pre-service teachers perceive a moderate presence of perceived research-based teacher education in their study programmes and a moderate level of perceived research competence. Furthermore, regression analyses revealed a significant relationship between perceived research-based teacher education and all three components of perceived research competence, with the largest effect observed for perceived research skills. These findings show the potential of systematic, institution-wide support for research experiences in teacher education, including collaborative projects, faculty and student research efforts, and opportunities to apply and present research findings. By strengthening the elements of research-based teacher education, programmes can help pre-service teachers develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for evidence-based practice.

Impact of a one-off demonstration on the use of ICT in the teaching of andragogy students on their change of attitude towards the use of ICT in education

Impact of a one-off demonstration on the use of ICT in the teaching of andragogy students on their change of attitude towards the use of ICT in education

Martin Kursch

Статья научная

The research study deals with the issue of attitudes towards the use of ICT in the education of andragogy students. As a method of research, we chose a three-year experiment. The study first surveyed 224 students in andragogical fields - future educators - in order to discover input factors like identifying their relationship to ICT, skills, experience in the field of ICT and frequency of the use of ICT at work. The study further examines four separate variables, representing three dimensions of attitudes (cognitive, conative and emotional) towards the use of ICT in education - the conviction to use ICT in their teaching, the opinion on the impact of the use of ICT on the understanding of curriculum, the opinion on the impact of the use of ICT in teaching and education itself and the tendency to act to recommend the use of ICT in teaching to their colleagues. In the university teaching of students itself, using the didactic method of AIDA on a mathematical problem, the experimental group is the subject of a demonstration of the use of ICT in empirical verification of the results of the task, as opposed to a control group that does not use ICT in teaching. Specifically, the representation of results in MS Excel and the empirical verification of results in a Python-created program are used. The research aims to determine the impact of the demonstration of a one-off use of ICT in teaching on the change of dimensions of attitude towards the use of ICT in education represented by separated variables. Their rate is measured by a 10-point bipolar scale. The results show p value (p function show_abstract() { $('#abstract1').hide(); $('#abstract2').show(); $('#abstract_expand').hide(); }

Implementation of bologna process at the ss. Cyril and Methodius university in Skopje: a view from inside

Elena Achkovska Leshkovska

Статья научная

This paper deals with the description of the reforms in higher education in the Republic of Macedonia, made in the last decade. More precisely, the aim of this study is to discuss the implementation of Bologna principles in Ss. Cyril and Methodius University by comparing the reports from both the internal and the external evaluations in two follow-up periods (between 2002/03 and 2005/06, and between 2006/07 and 2009/10). Several official documents are analyzed for this purpose. The results show that the European credit transfer system (ECTS) in first and second cycle of studies is applied in every member of the University and a number of positive changes have been made in all areas of its activity. However, some expected difficulties and weaknesses are pointed out, due to the objective economic situation in the Republic of Macedonia or to the subjective understanding of “Bologna philosophy”. Apart from official reports, a view from inside can bring on surface additional examples of ECTS misinterpretation and illusion of progress. To avoid the catch of distorted Bologna, it is suggested all participants in this process to take seriously recommendation for improvement given by European University Association.

Статья научная

The discipline of students is a problem for which there are as many different approaches as theoretical concepts and legal regulation of these issues. It is too often based on procedures which are used to prevent undesired behaviour. The dominance of such discipline treatment, which often puts the teacher in a position of a conductor and the student as an executor, perhaps is the simplest but not the most proper way. Viewed from this perspective the discipline should deny repressive and aggressive methods. This actually represents an attempt to overcome the historical understanding of the term pupils` discipline which carries an emphasized negative connotation. This does not mean removing of all rules, regulations and procedures, but an attempt to increase students` accountability and considering this fact, since the nineties of the twentieth century, in the world intensively appear strings of pedagogical leadership models, which treat the issue of students’ discipline. Stressing their extraordinary importance, we decided to study the pattern of restitution and the effects of its application in establishing school discipline.

Статья научная

The rapid scientific and technological development imposes numerous changes in all spheres of life and work. In such circumstances, a computer has become a part of all aspects of life: economy, education, free time, family. Since children in contemporary society increasingly acquire knowledge before the school age, the question is how to prepare them for the world in which we live, bearing in mind how significantly different it is from the world in which the previous generations grew up. The research was aimed at examining the attitudes of preschool teachers about the importance of computers in the realization of educational activities in preschool institutions. The study included 54 teachers from Kosovo and Metohija: Kosovska Mitrovica, Donja Gušterica and Ropotovo. The research results indicate that digital technology is a very important and a useful didactic tool in the realization of educational activities in preschool institutions and that preschool teachers have the required competence to implement the technology. However, they are not satisfied with the quality of their ICT education and training during their studies; they also feel that their institutions do not provide adequate working conditions for the use of computers in the realization of educational tasks.

Статья научная

Students are expected to be adequately prepared to respond to technological advancements and complex global challenges. In this context, cognitive flexibility plays a crucial role in facilitating the development of appropriate alternative strategies. Previous research has identified several relevant learning activities aimed at enhancing cognitive flexibility. In the context of differentiated instruction, cognitive flexibility is further elaborated through consideration of the individual uniqueness of students, the learning situation, and the environment, making this concept particularly relevant to the educational setting in Indonesia. Consequently, this study aimed to enhance the cognitive flexibility of adolescent students through differentiated instruction training. A total of 70 adolescent students participated in a one-group pretest-posttest experimental design using convenience sampling. The participants completed an informed consent form and engaged in training activities for approximately 4 weeks. The findings indicated that 66% of participants showed an increase in cognitive flexibility attitudes following the learning intervention. Furthermore, inferential statistical analysis revealed significant differences between pretest and posttest results. The differentiated instruction training proved effective in improving cognitive flexibility attitudes. This research has implications for the development of effective learning models and provides recommendations for the enhancement of skills among adolescent students, not only within the context of Indonesia but also for potential implementation in different cultures and locations.

Статья научная

The evaluation of the educational system is performed through the prism of the relationship between the individual person and society, taking into account social and economic, political, cultural, socio-economic, family tendencies and directions of development. Therefore, the analysis of the influence of social, economic, welfare, psychological and school factors is necessary in order to identify the positive, but also the negative influences of the factors and thus prevents the poor academic results of the deaf and hard of hearing students. The research problem is aimed at a wider understanding of the factors of academic achievement or failure of the deaf and hard of hearing students in order to improve the quality of their education and upbringing of deaf and hard of hearing students in schools for the deaf and hard of hearing, but also in the field of inclusive education. This paper presents a part of the research results related to the correlation between the indicators of the wider social context and the academic performance of the deaf and hard hearing students. The sample consisted of 59 respondents attending schools for the deaf and hard of hearing students in the Republic of Serbia. For this research, the method of theoretical analysis and synthesis was used in the study of the relevant literature and the determination of theoretical facts important for the research problem, and the survey and content analysis were used as the research techniques. The results showed that there were no statistically significant differences in academic achievement in relation to the type of environment in which the students are living, or in relation to the presence of the cultural institutions in the environment. There is a difference in the academic achievements of the deaf and hard of hearing students in whose environment there are or there are no active organizations for the deaf and hard of hearing, which represents important data in order to create strategies to support the deaf and hard of hearing students.

Informational behavior in the COVID-19 pandemic: psychological predictors

Informational behavior in the COVID-19 pandemic: psychological predictors

Anastasia Vasilievna Grishina, Abakumova Irina Vladimirovna

Статья научная

The core problem of the COVID-19 pandemic for psychologists is to find out how people cope with the stress of isolation and the threat of fatal disease. The scale of the pandemical impact on the psychological well-being of an individual has still no knowledge and psychological predictors which the impact depends on need to be identified. This paper presents an empirical study of informational behavior and its psychological predictors in the pandemic. The research was held online in April-May 2020. The total amount of 165 participants, aged from 18 to 66. The subjects were chosen from a randomly selected sample. The participants were asked to estimate their informational consumption in pandemic. Tolerance to ambiguity, hardiness and anxiety was studied in groups distinguished according to changes in informational consumption. The findings of this study indicate a significant correlation between informational behavior and psychological characteristics related to coping with stress. Besides the analysis proved a negative correlation between reactive and personal anxiety and tolerance to ambiguity, hardiness and its components. We have confirmed that increased informational comsumption can be considered as a coping strategy for overcoming the pandemic social isolation among respondents with low hardiness and tolerance to ambiguity. Stable and decreased informational consumption indicates that respondents with high hardiness and tolerance to ambiguity and low state and trait anxiety don't need to consume information for coping with difficulties of pandemic self-isolation. Future work will concentrate on expanding the list of psychological predictors of informational behavior and studying the features of their interaction in different situations.

Instruments of empathy-shaping in the creation of a culture of peace and non-violence

Instruments of empathy-shaping in the creation of a culture of peace and non-violence

Aleksandar M. Filipović, Momčilo B. Bajac, Ivana Spaić

Статья обзорная

Empathy as a human trait that gives the ability to understand, respect, and share the feelings of other people is one of the most important elements in building a secure society and a culture of peace and non-violence. The level of empathy in individuals is influenced by endogenous and exogenous factors, and it has an affective and cognitive dimension. The aim of this paper is to investigate the concept of empathy, the extent of influence of endogenic and exogenous factors, to investigate the influence of three main elements in the development of empathy in children and youth, namely family, school, and media, and to investigate the degree of correlation between empathy and creation and maintaining a culture of peace and nonviolence. The methods used in this paper are quantitative and qualitative content analysis, comparative analysis, historical method, analogy method, and analysis of primary and secondary sources. The research confirmed the importance of empathy in the development of a culture of tolerance, dialogue, respect for opposing opinions and goals, respect for diversity, and non-violent response to conflicts. All these elements are simultaneously elements of a culture of peace and non-violence, and therefore the conclusion is that empathy is one of the preconditions for building a culture whose goal is a safer and more humane society that provides greater security from physical destruction than a culture of war and aggressive problem-solving. The authors conclude this paper with recommendations for the three main pillars of shaping empathy in children, namely family, school, and the media.

Integration of Popular Music in Educational Projects in Higher Education

Integration of Popular Music in Educational Projects in Higher Education

Lada Duraković, Sabina Vidulin

Статья научная

In order to adequately prepare music education students for their future careers, it is important to include content related to popular music in the curricula, in addition to courses that focus on developing knowledge and skills in classical music. Despite the widespread recognition of its importance, educational knowledge of popular music is a relatively new or even unknown source in teaching music at conservatoires. In Croatia, for example, music teachers who start their careers in schools do not acquire sufficient academic knowledge or professional practice related to popular music during their studies. The music education system has marginalized this genre and there are no separate courses on this topic in the curricula of music education programs. Consequently, content related to popular music is usually integrated into the curriculum through teaching projects. This article presents the implementation, aims and outcomes of three such projects carried out at the Department of Music Pedagogy at the Academy of Music in Pula. The projects are: Film Music Adventure, which considers well-known soundtracks from films, Superstar, which is dedicated to exploring the intersection of rock and opera, and a locally oriented project reviewing musical life in the largest city in the Istrian region, entitled The Seventies Measured by the Metronome: Everyday Musical Life in Pula 1970–1980. Working on these projects engaged students in a dynamic and interactive learning process and increased their engagement, motivation and interest, as well as their knowledge of popular music.

Intellectual independence of students in the process of gaining knowledge

Intellectual independence of students in the process of gaining knowledge

Zvezdan Arsić

Отчет

The main task of teaching at the present stage of social development that is characterized by the rapid development of science and technology should be directed towards ensuring that students are in the process of gaining knowledge as more independent. Learning in the modern conditions of life and work more focused on finding new information and acquiring skills that they interpret, judge, critically analyze and find their practical application. Individual learning is a process in which students do their own activities, and the school should primarily be to develop pupils’ skills and habits for independent work, or to enable them to actively come to know and own efforts. With a program of independent activities of children in the process of acquiring knowledge in teaching should begin already at a younger age in order to further their education existed during the constant rise of autonomy and independence. Individual learning in the classroom requires thought flexibility, critical thinking, individual work and intellectual independence, creativity and productivity, motivation and interest, as well as a partnership of teachers and students in the realization of educational tasks.

Inter-faculty cooperation in English language teaching using educational comic strips on geoforensics - a pilot study

Lidija Beko, Dragoslava Mićović

Статья научная

The paper deals with the research and promotion of inter-faculty cooperation in the field of foreign language teaching. By focusing on educational comic strips as an underutilised language strategy at university level, we have tried to reduce or completely eliminate the tensions and uncertainties that accompany the learning or teaching of a new academic field. The study explores how a particular narrative from geoforensic practice is transformed into adapted educational comic strips. The focus then turns to the application of educational comic strips in language classes, and how six lecturers at two different faculties and their students in the first year of study perceive that application and respond to the challenges of teaching/learning in this way. Two surveys were conducted in order to obtain more precise data on the quality of the comic strips as a teaching/learning activity: the former, a qualitative survey of lecturers, and the latter, a quantitative survey of students. The results of the research indicate that even when the area of exploration such as geoforensics and comic strips is somewhat unknown for both teachers and students, the authenticity of material, the quality of preparation, the conscious and explicit participation of all sides, all potentially lead to new forms of good practice and positive linguistic outcomes.
