Quantitative spleen parameters: Completeness and quality of analysis in computed tomography
Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of quantitative spleen size interpretation in abdominal computed tomography (CT) reports.Materials and methods. An analysis of 62 280 abdominal CT scan reports was performed using data extracted from the Unified Medical Information System (UMIS). The analysis focused on the terminology used and the frequency with which objective, quantitative measurements of the spleen were documented. Deficiencies in the interpretations of spleen dimensions were identified. Furthermore, the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to mitigate these critical reporting gaps was investigated.Results. The analysis revealed significant deficiencies in the interpretation of spleen size in abdominal CT reports. Precise numerical measurements of dimensions were absent in 99.9% of the reviewed cases. Of the minimal fraction (0.1%) that did contain a quantitative assessment, only a minority provided a specific calculated splenic index value.
