In response to the interest shown in Adam Thorpe's account of translating Madame Bovary into English (an article reprinted in Footpath-5) we have decided to devote a special section to translations of modern English literature into Russian together with articles on the process of literature translation. Our first article is on Russian translations of Beryl Bainbridge, author of Master Georgie, who died in 2010. We also publish an article by Oliver Ready of St Antony's College, Oxford University who has translated Dostoevsky into English. His thoughts about translation (in Russian) should be of interest to all readers.

Sentiment replaces phantasmagoria: a review of Graham Swift's tomorrow

In a review of Graham Swift's novel 'Tomorrow', the comparative simplicity of the latter is emphasized: there are no phantasmagorias and grotesques characteristic of the earlier works of the writer, the genre of "stories as tales" is abandoned, and even irony is absent. Something that has always been serious for Swift has survived: the theme of romantically true only love and the theme of finding children. The appeal to a love story in the 60s is reminiscent of other contemporary novels - notably Ian McEwan's 'On Chesil Beach' and Hilary Mantel's 'An Experiment in Love'. Seminar "Contemporary British Literature in the Educational Process of Russian Universities", the Oxford-Russia Foundation and its President Anthony Smith, Perm State University and Boris Proskurnin, personally Karen Hewitt, who is the inspirer and coordinator of the program for introducing modern British works into the educational process of Russian universities. writers have undoubtedly influenced the improvement of the study of British literature in our university. As a result, books by contemporary British writers appeared in many universities, which made it possible to study the specifics of the topics and problems of contemporary works and the peculiarities of the modern English language. The article presents the experience of working on the work of N. Hornby "All about the boy" with second-year students of the linguistic institute, analyzes the features of the subject matter of the work and the specificity of the author's language, which is the modern spoken language of the inhabitants of London.
