The role of fairy tale motifs in the children's book by A.S.Byatt

Kulaga Olga

Статья научная

The article examines the phenomenon of processing and borrowing fairy tales and images, which is significant for modern literature, and also analyzes various methods of processing borrowed elements and their functions in the novel of the modern English writer A.S. Byatt "Children's Book". The author of the novel revises the tales of C. Perrault, G.H. Andersen, the Brothers Grimm, E.T.A. Hoffman, and also uses the motives of the works of J. Barry, K. Graham, L. Carroll, R. Kipling. It is emphasized that most often the writer uses such processing techniques as allusions and reminiscences, which allows A.S. Byatt to create new, unique characters based on the already known ones.

The role of photographic images in contemporary novels

The role of photographic images in contemporary novels

Sudlenkova Olga

Статья научная

The article examines a phenomenon that has become widespread in English literature in recent decades - the use of photographs as a plot-forming element. The article touches upon the problem of ekphrasis - the ratio of visual and verbal images. In Beryl Bainbridge's novels, Georgie the Master and Jonathan Coe, Before It Rains, the story is centered around a series of photographs. The plot of the novel Out of this World by Graham Swift is based on the life story and family collisions of a professional photographer. The stories of the heroes, based on photographic images, become a way of self-disclosure. Photos play an important role in the lives of the characters in the three short stories that make up Rachel Seyfert's novel, while serving as pivotal points for the plot.

Tom Stoppard: the coast of utopia a trilogy of plays

Tom Stoppard: the coast of utopia a trilogy of plays

Kemp Peter

Статья научная

(Editor's Note: Peter Kemp is a well-known British literary critic who is the Fiction Editor for the Sunday Times newspaper. He lectures and writes on modern fiction, and frequently takes part in literary discussions on BBC programmes and elsewhere. He has been an adviser on. the selection of novels for our Contemporary British Literature project. In response to one of the letters in our new 'Letters Section' we decided to publish an article on contemporary drama. This review of Tom Stoppard's trilogy of plays was first published in The Times Literary Supplement in 2002, and we are grateful for their permission to reprint it. Towards the end of the article are some paragraphs discussing the 2002 production which closed six years ago. However, the editors decided that the comments were sufficiently interesting for our readers and should therefore not be cut from Peter Kemp's original review.)
