В статье представлен обзор взглядов и суждений, изложенных в одном из старейших периодических изданий Русской Православной Церкви - журнале «Воскресное чтение». Отмечается тенденция к последовательному осмыслению проблем воспитания и образования в Церкви на страницах журнала. Раскрывается процесс формирования воззрений на цели и задачи образования в Церкви. Как отмечают авторы, развитие педагогических идей происходит по пути от признания значимости духовного образования в целом и постулирования первостепенности развития с его помощью нравственных качеств христиан до возникновения мысли о наличии у Церкви реальной возможности осуществлять просветительскую деятельность, построенную на бессословных началах. Анализируются, высказываемые на страницах журнала, мысли о сходстве и различии светских училищ и училищ Церкви. Отмечается постепенное осознание значимости образования и необходимости привлечения всё более широких слоёв общества в образовательные учреждения при Церкви.
