The adoption of the ISO 9001 standard for quality management and its impact on competitiveness: empirical findings and discussion

Бесплатный доступ

Over the last decades, the paradigm of Total Quality Management (TQM) - also referred to as the Quality Management paradigm - seems to has been successfully forged in our business world. And the intensive dissemination of the ISO 9000 standards has been associated with the mentioned phenomenon. Thirty years after the ISO 9001 Quality Management standard was launched initially in 1987, over one-and-a-half million ISO 9001 certificates are in force worldwide. The outcomes of this global standard for Quality Management have been widely studied, despite the conclusions are contradictory and then inconclusive. The benefits have been associated with the increase of productivity and competitiveness, product and service quality improvement, customer satisfaction and employee motivation, among many other factors. Conversely, several scholarly studies had also underlined certain pitfalls and pervasive effects that can result from the implementation and the certification of the ISO 9001 model such as paperwork, superficial implementation and lack of internal motivation. This paper tries to contribute to the literature shedding light on the implications of ISO 9001 standard on the general macro level and corporate level competitiveness. Avenues for further research and implications for managers and other stakeholders are also discussed.
