An insight into the British monarchy

The article reveals the image of the British Monarchy formed in and by the English printed media sphere and realised directly through the image of the Queen and the Royal Family. Official Royal Family websites, British Quality Press and tabloids like “The Independent”, “The Guardian”, “The Sun”, “The Daily Express”, etc., which came out within 2015-2020, make up the empirical basis of the research. The article aims at revealing the contradiction between the image of monarch as head of state and the crisis of monarchic statehood in need of modernization. Research methodology includes contextual, linguoculturological, conceptual analyses, as well as method of critical discourse analysis. These methods involve applying to verbal means of communication through explication of conceptual information in the text. The analysed material testifies to the fact that printed mass media initially serve as the main tools for popularizing images that represent modern monarchy, whereas publicity is becoming the basis of its existence. There is a tendency to express dissatisfaction with the institution of monarchy rather than the personality of the Queen who embodies historical tradition, stability and national identity. The British Queen receives a more positive assessment in society. Explicit and implicit positive evaluation in mass-media texts is achieved through the use of lexemes, expressive syntactic models and contextual markers.

This work is devoted to cross-cultural analysis of proper names in everyday realia based on the material of English and German languages. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that proper names in everyday realia are not studied well in both native and foreign linguistics. The article provides definitions of such concepts as: toponym, geographical name, choronym, comonym, astyonym, limnonyms, potamonym, insulonym and realia. The work carried out a cross-cultural analysis and compiled classification of toponyms in everyday realia based on the material of the English and German languages. As a result of the cross-cultural analysis, the author comes to a conclusion that everyday realia of toponymic origin in the English and German languages got their names in honour of those places (cities, provinces, regions, subregions, communes, villages and farmlands, islands, rivers and lakes) where they were first produced. The results of the study can be used in compiling bilingual onomastic dictionaries, in compiling courses on toponymy and onomastics.

Functioning of grammar case forms of Russian substantives as stylistic devices

The article deals with a topical problem of linguistics, that is aesthetic potential of case forms of nouns in the Russian language. The aim of the article is to reveal stylistic devices expressed by grammar case forms of nouns in the Russian poetry. The main linguistic methods used in the study are descriptive and analytical, semantic and stylistic, distributive and quantitative methods. The material of the study is represented by poetic texts of the 20th century from the National Corpus of the Russian language as well as certain poetry collections. The novelty of the study is in determining stylistic devices represented by grammar case forms of Russian substantives.

In this article we will observe how ICT (information and communication technologies) can be used in the assessment of teaching English. For last period we have developed the best understanding of how we could help to learn language and these changes must be reflected in our assessment. We need to develop skills and to be the "users" of language. The assessment purpose has also changed; it is not about the students' skills level assessment, but motivation, and self-reflection.

L’article porte sur l’évolution de l’idée de l’universalisme linguistique et l''ordre naturel des mots dans la phrase simple en français classique du XVI ème au XVIII ème siècle. L’article représente les résultats d’une ample étude diachronique réalisée par l’auteure qui avance, entre autres, l’idée selon laquelle l’évolution de la phrase verbale simple en français classique et le fait de la concurrence de ses deux invariants complètement grammaticalisés, au sein d’une même langue, met en cause l’existence même des structures syntaxiques universelles dites «profondes».

L’article se propose d’analyser les approches existantes concernant le statut des propositions infinitives qui ne permettent pas pour autant d’identifier ces dernières d’une manière efficace. L’article contient une proposition qui renouvellerait leur interprétation. L’auteure évoque la pertinence de l’élaboration d’une nouvelle approche, basée sur les relations de dépendance interne, dans l’optique diachronique et à la fois typologique pour décortiquer non seulement les particularités syntaxiques ou la sémantique des constituants de ces constructions, mais aussi et surtout de saisir les mécanismes de leur vitalité et pérennité dans la langue.

Linguistic representation of natural disasters in media coverage

Nowadays natural disasters affect the lives of thousands of people living all over the world. However, the complexity of the processes that deal with the problems of news coverage and recovery has received the relatively narrow focus of the scientists. Thus, the presented article aims to analyse the discourse of natural disasters, to highlight the main content categories and their subtopics and to reveal the stylistic peculiarities of the news articles of the given topic. To achieve the main goal of the research the authors selected the collection of texts that were obtained from various news sites. To reveal the overall discourse structure we applied a content analysis that helped to identify various thematic patterns and subtopics and after that to calculate the frequency of each theme. Methods of corpus linguistics and critical stylistics allowed the authors to select the frequent words and word combinations constituting each thematic pattern and analyse the significant lexical peculiarities of the examined discourse. In conclusion, the authors present the main findings of their work and discuss the possibilities of further research in the area of discourse analysis of natural disaster media coverage.

Modeling the discipline “Translation theory” according to the cultural peculiarities

Contemporary linguistics embraces diverse complex issues, with the linguistic aspects of interlingual speech activity (translation) being a key one. Discipline “Translation theory” is considered to be an important aspect of learning process that is included into the integrated approach of foreign language teaching. Nowadays a lot of foreign students from foreign countries decide to continue their education in Russia. Thus, Russian educational institutions have to adapt their programs according to the demands of new students. Foreign language department of South Ural State University offers to complete the program 45.04.01 “Philology”, that allows students working as teachers, translators and researchers in the field of linguistics and philology after the graduation. “Translation theory” is included into the obligatory list of subjects as it helps to establish connections between the source language and target language and to compare not only language forms, but also worldviews. The main aim of the article is to present the perception of the translation by Arabic students, the organisation peculiarities and the structure of the course “Translation theory”, to set up the goal of the course, to select the most significant topics that help Master students to get acquainted with the Russian translation theory. By using a mixed methods approach the authors also offer interesting tasks that could be given to students for individual work and enumerate difficulties that they come across during the implementation of the course. In conclusion, the most important competences that are formed during this discipline are presented.

Proper name in martial arts (based on the English language)

The article is devoted to the analysis of the proper name in the names of martial arts based on the material of the English language. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that names in the domain of martial arts with a proper name component in the English language have not been sufficiently studied both in domestic and foreign linguistics. The purpose of this work is to identify the linguocultural specifics of proper names in the composition of names from the domain of martial arts based on the English language. In accordance with this goal, the author solves the following problems: he offers an etymological characteristic of anthroponyms, toponyms and ethnonyms as part of names in the domain of martial arts, conducts a lexical and semantic analysis of the indicated anthroponyms, toponyms and ethnonyms, and compiles their thematic classification. As a result of the analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that anthroponyms in the names of martial arts based on the English language received their names in honor of individuals and dynasties who first created such styles of martial arts as: karate, judo, aikido, jujitsu, and etc. Toponyms in the names of martial arts are closely related to the geography and history of those countries and island states where they first appeared, with the traditions prevailing in a particular region. Ethnonyms in the names of martial arts reflect the culture of ethnic communities.

Russia as a target domain in American, British and Canadian political discourses

This article presents a fragment of the study of political metaphors involved in shaping the image of Russia in English mass media. Using corpus technologies, an array of material was analyzed in an original way from the NOW English-language corpus (electronic versions of articles from American, British and Canadian newspapers and magazines for June 12, 2016) - dominant metaphorical models, their most frequent frames, the models’ discursive characteristics, and pragmatic potential were revealed. The significance of the work is the use of corpus linguistics methods to study political metaphors, which greatly enriches the set of methods for studying political metaphors, increasing the representativeness and objectivity of the results obtained.

«Европеизация» образа бабушки в русском языковом сознании

Мы живем в эпоху глобализации и мировой интеграции, что неизменно приводит к сближению народов и культур. Однако под влиянием растущей «европеизации», образы, сложившиеся в языковом сознании носителей русской культуры, постепенно ассимилируются с западными, утрачивая национальную специфику и самобытность. На основе анализа ассоциативных словарей и проведенных экспериментов в рамках психолингвистической парадигмы рассматривается вопрос динамики образов русского языкового сознания.

«Подросток» Ф.М. Достоевского как роман воспитания: своеобразие жанровой модели

Рассматривая роман Ф.М. Достоевского «Подросток» в контексте традиций романа воспитания, автор убеждается в создании экспериментального метода изображения сознания молодого героя, внесении новых художественных средств в традиционную систему поэтики жанра. Характеризуя общий принцип изменения личности традиционного романа воспитания как диалектический, в «Подростке» автор обнаруживает принципиально иной способ изображения эволюции сознания: катастрофический; изменение героя в романе Ф.М. Достоевского проходит через кризис, скачок, перелом, преобразование совершается через катастрофу. Автор отмечает чрезвычайное внимание писателя к самому трепетному моменту - тому мгновению перехода, которое является первоэлементом процесса движения сознания. Это наблюдение позволило автору выявить особую - «центрированную» систему художественных средств: необыкновенная концентрация переживаний в одном мгновенье передается средствами хронотопа; выбираются такие формы психологического анализа, которые способны выявить мгновение перехода (воспоминания, представляющие собой проекцию в прошлое героя, исповедь, передающая итог предыдущего переживания и образование следующего решения, поток сознания, в течении которого улавливается переход от одной мысли (чувства) к другим). Автор приходит к заключению, что предпоследний роман Ф.М. Достоевского продолжает традицию романа воспитания, образуя следующий виток ее развития - раскрывая новую концепцию катастрофического становления личности.

Исследуется проблема бинарной оппозиции «свой» - «чужой», отраженной в языковом сознании носителей корпоративной культуры военных. На основе анализа данных теста «Завершение предложений» автор выделяет особенности корпоративной культуры военных, которые являются базовыми при разделении на «своих» и «чужих».

Тематическая цепочка как базовая номинативная текстовая категория представляет собой ключ к фабульной экспозиции. Контент-анализ тематической цепочки (как социолингвистическая методика) позволяет выявить основные типы номинации того или иного персонажа на заданном текстовом промежутке. Материал пяти приводимых контекстов искомого латинизма в поэме позволяет, не нарушая логики линейного движения исследователя по тексту, продемонстрировать разницу семантических оттенков единицы «power» в каждом случае. Статья может считаться этюдом к контент-анализу всей Песни первой в аспекте категории тематической цепочки.

«Фантастический юмор» в романе Ф. О' Брайена «О водоплавающих»

Автор рассматривает реализацию фантастического юмора на разных уровнях структуры романа. Также отмечается связь Ф. О'Брайена с традицией ирландской юмористической литературы и его новаторство в этой области.

Представленная статья посвящена одному из наиболее актуальных вопросов лингвистики - проблеме адекватности представления картины видения автора при переводе текстов на русский язык. Теоретико-методологической базой исследования является теория перспективы текста Н.Д. Маровой. Исследование проводится на материале поэтических текстов P.M. Рыльке в рамках сопоставительного анализа вариантов перевода этих текстов на русский язык. Результатом предпереводческого интерпритационного анализа текста становится выделение «визуализаторов» текстовидеологической картины мира, задающих определенную интерпретационную направленность текстовой перспективы.

«Я и ты» русского бытового романса: речежанровый и статистический аспекты

В статье выявлено, что важной речежанровой характеристикой бытового романса может служить частота использования определенных слов. В качестве инструментария для создания частотного словника текстов бытового романса были использованы компьютерные программы, позволившие выполнить частеречную разметку, привести грамматические формы частотных слов к начальной форме, распределить леммы по частоте встречаемости. Представлен список 25 самых частотных лемм с указанием количеств этих слов в текстах бытовых романсов. Определено, что обращенность, адресация, императивная апелляция к предмету чувств являются обязательными жанровыми признаками романса, формирующим его диалогичность, что подтверждается вариантами грамматического представления действующих лиц в текстах, относящихся к жанру бытового романса: Я (МЫ) ↔ ТЫ (ВЫ); Я ↔ ОН/ОНА; Я ↔ нелично-местоименный объект; нелично-местоименный субъект ↔ ТЫ (ВЫ). Результаты исследования могут быть использованы для решения актуальной проблемы определения романса как жанра, его жанровых признаков.

Авто- и гетеростереотипы о представителях русской и китайской культур

В настоящей статье представлен опыт организации и проведения направленного ассоциативного эксперимента по выявлению авто- и гетеростереотипов представителей русской и китайской культур. Разработана анкета, включающая вопросы-стимулы, направленные на изучение авто- и гетеростереотипов о представителях русской и китайской культур. С целью интерпретации полученных данных выделяются ассоциативные поля «Внешность», «Ценности и пристрастия», «Национальный характер». В результате проведенного исследования выявлены авто- и гетеростереотипы представителей русского и китайского этносов. Наибольшее число реакций получил вопрос-стимул ассоциативного поля «Национальный характер». Данные направленного ассоциативного эксперимента по выявлению авто- и гетеростереотипов о представителях русской и китайской культур будут способствовать прогнозированию межнациональной напряженности и гармонизации межкультурного общения.
